The Meaning Of Metal Has Changed

I hate what metal has become. Metal used to be heavy guitar riffs and insane drumming. Metal used to be bands like Metallica and Megadeth and Black Sabbath. Now metal is bands like Children of Bodom, All Shall Perish and Black Dahlia Murder. Now, don't get me wrong, some of today's metal is still good. Slipknot and Slayer still kick tits. I know they aren't exactly new bands, but they play new metal. They call it death metal or black metal, but it's not metal. It's more screamo than anything else.

It doesn't have real vocals, it's more just screaming and growling. That's cool sometimes, but not when it's your entire song. Songs need melody, not just random screaming. You don't need singing to make music, but the screaming and growling makes the music worse, not better.

And on the other side of the new metal spectrum there's Dragonforce. They call themselves the future of metal, but if that's metal's future, metal is dead. Dragonforce is pretty much a mix of pop and metal. Such a mix should never be done. Metal played by hardcore, mildly insane men. Pop is played by feminine teenage boys and pretentious teenage girls. And Brittany Spears.

When I hear today's metal, it saddens me. They have effectively ruined an entire genre of music. When I want to listen to metal, I want to hear the old stuff, not the new screaming. You used to be able to look forward to a new album coming out, now when I hear more metal has been released, I die a little inside.
